Self Care takes a conscious effort. Here's 6 simple things you can do each single day.
There are days I forget to look after myself. In the “busyness” of my days, there are times when I forget to eat lunch. This is a bad habit I had for a long time and sometimes still do. Self Care takes a conscious effort. So am not only writing this to share with you, but I’m writing for myself too.
Self Care has been a prominent topic for awhile now and a lot of them focus around me time, exercise, eating healthy and rest – all of which are important.
I want to expand on this by sharing with you 6 things you can do every single day to help you stay focused, balanced and fulfilled.
1. Turn off the news!
We are bombarded with negativity and when we take this on, it crushes our soul, beliefs and outlook on life. This overload of negativity can cause so much stress and anxiety in our lives.
There are so many good things that happen in our world but the news drowns out the good news. Don’t worry about missing out on the news – if you do need to know something, someone will tell you. Just don’t take it on!!!
The news is on our TV’s, Radios, Social Media and we all have someone in our lives that likes to announce and promote all that is bad in the world.
Yes – bad things happen, I’m not denying it, but what I am saying is that we don’t need to let it feed our minds and souls. Focus on the good things – you’ll find a lot of good when you look for it.
Do you remember the 1975 Skyhooks song “Horror Movie” – it’s all about the negativity of the news. (Now I’m showing my age).
Does the negative voices in your head play over and over? When we hear something enough we believe it – good or bad.
Our words and thoughts are powerful. If you have spoken bad things about yourself and your circumstances (or even thought them) like “I’ll never be good enough”, “I’ll never get out of debt”, “I can’t do this” – then now is the time to start changing that.
Negative thoughts and beliefs can crush us and keep us from becoming the amazing person we were meant to be.
How do we change? By writing down every negative thought or thing you have said or been told, then next to it – write the exact opposite. Then put a line through the negative.
Eg: “I can’t get out of debit” – change to “I always handle my finances with care and attention and actively getting out of debt”
Once you have this list – print out multiple copies and put up in places you will see it regularly. The bathroom mirror, your bedroom wall, the fridge – even keep a copy in your car, handbag or manbag.
Every time you see these, say them out loud. Make sure you see them everyday!
You will soon start acting on these new statements to make them your new reality.
3. Do something kind every day!
Have you heard the saying – “It’s better to give than receive”. It’s true. Pay attention to your feelings/emotions when you do something kind for someone else.
This could be as simple as giving up your seat on the bus/train. Buying someone a coffee, giving a sincere compliment and sharing your smile.
Is there someone you know doing it tough? Why not make them dinner, give them a fuel or grocery voucher. Are there clothes you don’t need now that you can give to someone else?
Let your kindness imagination go wild.
4. Take 5 minutes!
Everyone can make time for 5 minutes. In this time, close your eyes (not while you’re driving), breathe deeply in and out 5 times. Imagine yourself exhaling all the negativity and inhaling only what it good.
Still with your eyes closed – picture yourself in a place that brings you joy. Walking along the beach, your favourite holiday destination, a place that gives you peace.
Realise that you cannot control everything – and that’s ok. Getting stressed or worrying about it won’t change it. In this 5 minute break, tell yourself that it’s ok. (I have to work at this myself. I used to say “I stress about stress before there’s even stress to stress about”) – Don’t use this mantra – it’s not good for you!
There’s also a great app called Headspace that has quick “bite size” guided meditations when you only have a few minutes.
I’d like to add here, that if there is a situation that is hurting you emotionally or physically, please seek professional help. It’s good to have a friend you can turn to, but at times we do need a good counsellor.
6. Wash Your Face!
If you don’t already wash your face every morning and night, you’ll be surprised at just how refreshing and invigorating it is. It’s that feeling you get when you leave the hairdressers – you feel like a new person full of confidence.
As our skin absorbs everything you put on it, make sure you are only using products free from harmful chemicals. My personal recommendation is using Ahava Life Skincare products. Yes I am biased but don’t just take my word for it – check out our 5 star reviews on our products.
Our lives are so fast past that we can easily forget beautiful moments in our lives. There are so many beautiful journal books available today, so treat yourself and start journaling every day.
You can write about your struggles, your joys, count your blessings, write about the dreams you have and so much more. Putting on paper is very therapeutic. But don’t just leave it there.
Spend time each month reviewing your journal. What beautiful memories did you forget? What struggles did you overcome? What about your dreams – are they coming to fruition or have you found what you need to do to help those dreams come true?
When you journal, don’t be afraid to be real and honest. This is very import in your growth.
I hope these six tips help you live a stress free and self care life. Enjoy!
